Overall Scripture: Exodus 17:8–16

Key Verse: Exodus 17:15 (NLT) – “Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means ‘the Lord is my banner’).”

In this powerful passage, the Israelites face an unexpected attack from the Amalekites. As Joshua leads the army in battle, Moses stands on a hill with the staff of God raised high. As long as his hands are lifted, Israel dominates the battle—but when he lowers them, the enemy gains ground. With the help of Aaron and Hur, who support Moses’ hands until sunset, Israel secures the victory. Moses then builds an altar and calls it Yahweh-Nissi, declaring that it was not by human strength, but by God’s presence and power that they overcame.
